ROSE'S DREAMY WESTERN PHOTOSHOOT
Some sessions stay with me long after they’re over, and this was one of them.
This month’s shoot took place at Gibson Ranch, where we leaned into a softer, romantic western-inspired atmosphere, letting the morning light and quiet landscape guide the story.
A Familiar Face
One of my favorite parts of photographing returning clients is getting to witness the chapters between our sessions. As we made our way to the first spot, we caught up on life, and she shared that these photos were meant to mark the chapter before her move to Texas. Moving forward, to me, every photograph carried a little more meaning. I couldn't stop smiling when I took this first picture. I had hoped to incorporate the horses at the ranch into our shoot, and it made this first image feel like the perfect introduction.
Trust the Process
There's something so rewarding about working with returning clients because they're willing to embrace the creative process. Rose completely trusted my vision, and I truly think that's one of the biggest reasons these images turned out the way they did. I always hope my clients leave feeling like they just spent time hanging out instead of standing in front of a camera. If we happen to create beautiful photos along the way, that's the cherry on top. And yes... this pose has officially earned the nickname "the flamingo." I stand by it, it's timeless.
Like an Old Memory
Does anyone else remember those Old West saloons where you could dress up in historical clothing and leave with a sepia-toned portrait? I couldn't stop thinking about those old Western portrait studios while we were creating this photo. I wanted to borrow that feeling without recreating it exactly. I have such a soft spot for photographs that feel like they could've been pulled from a memory. A soft, dreamy portrait that never goes out of style. No matter how creative a session becomes, I always make space for classic portraits that let my clients simply be themselves.
A Wish for What's Next
This might be my favorite moment from the entire morning.
Rose spotted a dandelion, picked it up, and instantly made the session feel even more personal. I always want my clients to feel like they have a voice in their session. The photos are, after all, a reflection of their story. This image reminds me that creativity grows when we stop overthinking and trust our instincts. It felt fitting that one of my favorite images became the classic "make a wish" photo. So here's mine: I hope this new chapter in Texas is filled with courage, opportunity, and the freedom to chase every idea that comes to mind. If this session taught me anything, it's that some of the most beautiful moments begin with simply trusting yourself.
The Art of Softness
This was the moment where everything started to click. Rose's outfit couldn't have been more perfect for this scene. The scenery caught the sun so beautifully that I was able to lean into the bright highlights and create the soft, airy look I had imagined from the beginning. Her outfit compliments the warmth of the sunlit field. Sometimes the light does half the work, this is exactly the kind of image I hoped we'd create.
Comfort Comes First
Something I always want my clients to remember is that they are in control of their session. My job is to guide, encourage, and bring a vision to life but every choice is theirs. For this moment, I asked Rose if she was open to laying down for the next few photos. Once she said yes, we continued exploring different poses and little adjustments to create something that still felt natural to her. I love that this photo doesn't feel overly posed, it feels like a quiet moment of confidence and contentment.
One Second in Time
I often ask my clients to look off into the distance. It’s a small adjustment, but I love how it transforms an image from feeling posed into something more thoughtful and candid. This photo is my favorite from the entire session. I love that Rose is looking toward the brightest part of the frame, it feels symbolic. What makes this image even more special is that it existed for only a second. A moment before or a moment after, the feeling would have been completely different. That's the magic of photography, the ability to hold onto something that only happened once.
A Different Perspective
One of my favorite parts of photography is finding beauty in places that might otherwise go unnoticed. After showing Rose a quick preview of photos, she immediately noticed how the trees created this beautiful, elongated perspective that made the image feel almost whimsical.
Closing This Chapter
As we wrapped up the session, we spent our final moments simply playing with the light. Rose, thank you for trusting me with this chapter of your story. Thank you for being open to my ideas, for bringing your own creativity into the session, and for allowing me to document such an exciting transition in your life. This photoshoot has become one I will look back on for inspiration, and I truly hope we have the opportunity to create together again.
